We have been working closely with 3 community gardens, Peebles CAN, St Ronan’s Well & The Secret Garden in the Peebles and Innerleithen area of the Borders to make small areas of the gardens more dementia friendly with safer walkways, more stable furniture, high raised beds and clear signage.
It is well researched and documented that gardening is very good for your physical and mental health. In a community garden you get the added bonus of belonging to a like minded group of people, giving something back to the community, and the opportunity to make friends, learn from, teach, support and be supported by other people.
The local gardens have been working hard to develop the community gardens which grow food and welcome local people into the gardens to learn, make friends and enjoy.
For a while, they had been saying
“It would be good to have a little leaflet with contact details for all the gardens on it”
So together with the gardens we have produced a lovely information leaflet which gives details of all the community gardens in the area.
The plan is to distribute the leaflets to GP & dental practices, health premises, shops and businesses to spread the word about the local community gardens to as many people as possible.
The leaflet can be downloaded here
