Sheeren’s December Blog – Flintshire

by Sheeren Devine

It has been a festive few weeks here in Leeswood and Pontblyddyn, the countdown to Christmas is often a busy time for people. However, the Torrential rain has not stopped customers from supporting our little Community Cafe. We opened today (20th December) for the last time this year, the Volunteers will be taking a well-deserved two-week break.  We enjoyed mince pies donated by the local garage. We raised funds with a raffle from donated prizes, sold knitted Christmas stockings, kindly made by one of our volunteers and sold table decorations made by one of my friends.  We were delighted to receive Christmas cards form Customers, addressed to the Cafe Staff. We feel this is a testament of how much people enjoy attending.

I have also had fun decorating Christmas biscuits with the High Fives, the younger youth group Run by volunteers from Bethania Chapel. I was delighted to be invited to Ysgol Derwenfa Christmas Concert, which included a performance of the Nativity from the infants and a performance of Scrooge by the juniors. As a previous Teaching Assistant, I am aware the time and effort involved in putting together a Christmas production. I was both thoroughly impressed and entertained; the Pupils are very talented indeed. Continuing with the School, I was honoured to be invited to the School Christmas Lunch. I enjoyed a wonderful meal in a classroom, with the Staff, Governors, Councillors and friends of the School.  The School Cook made a turkey dinner, with a choice of 7 puddings (yes you could have all 7) followed by chocolates. Stuffing my face aside, it made feel a valued member of the Community. I think that is enough from me for this year so I will take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas, and I will look forward to updating you in 2019.
